Phone Habits
Notification Anxiety
Calm the nervous anticipation every ping creates.
Why This Habit Is Harmful
Each notification triggers a micro-dose of cortisol as your body prepares to respond. Over a day of hundreds of pings, your baseline stress stays elevated, and you develop a background hum of anxiety that you mistake for normal. It erodes sleep, patience, and focus.
How to Break It
- 1Turn off all notifications except calls and texts from favorites.
- 2Check messages on a schedule rather than by alert.
- 3Use Do Not Disturb with scheduled exceptions.
- 4Notice your physical reaction to a ping and name it: "that is just a notification."
- 5Put the phone in another room during meals and focused time.
Healthier Replacement
Replace the ping-check with a deliberate "message hour" at 12 and 6 PM. You stay connected without living in a state of alert.
