Reading Distraction

Absorb books and articles without your mind wandering.

The Problem

You sit down to read something valuable but your mind treats it like a springboard to other thoughts — what to cook, an email to send, a worry about tomorrow. You finish a chapter having truly read none of it.

Strategies to Overcome It

  • 1Read in a distraction-free spot with your phone in another room.
  • 2Pause every few pages to summarize what you just read in a margin note.
  • 3Set a reading goal (e.g., 20 pages) so the session has a boundary.
  • 4Use a physical bookmark and keep a pen for annotations.
  • 5Try reading slightly slower than comfortable to force engagement.

Your 2-Minute Action

Put your phone in a drawer, open the book to where you left off, and read five pages with a pen in hand to mark anything that surprises you.
