Focus Tips
Cannot Focus After an Argument
Recover composure and attention after a conflict.
The Problem
You just had a heated argument — with a partner, colleague, or friend — and your nervous system is still buzzing. You sit down to work but your mind replays the fight on loop, and you cannot think straight.
Strategies to Overcome It
- 1Take a 10-minute walk to metabolize the adrenaline.
- 2Write down what happened and what you feel to externalize it.
- 3Do box breathing (4-4-4-4) for two minutes to calm your system.
- 4Tackle a simple mechanical task to ease back into doing mode.
- 5If possible, schedule a repair conversation so it stops looping.
Your 2-Minute Action
Set a 2-minute timer and write the argument out on paper, then close it. You have acknowledged it; now do one small task.
